Does Your Water Heater Support a Thermostatic Valve?

Electric Storage & Air-Energy Water Heaters
If you heat water with a storage tank, size is everything for thermostatic compatibility:
- Electric storage heaters need a tank capacity of at least 60 liters, set between 55–65°C.
- Air-energy (heat pump) heaters require at least 100 liters at the same temperature range.
Running a standard valve? Both systems work fine—no minimum tank size required, as long as your hot water supply is consistent.
Gas Water Heaters
With gas, the key number is flow rate—how many liters per minute your heater can push out:

Standard valves, again, work across all gas heater configurations without restriction.
Systems That Are NOT Compatible with Thermostatic Valves

- Ceiling clearance: At least 1,117mm from the outlet to the ceiling to accommodate the full height of your shower riser and head
5. Plan for Concealed Plumbing
These premium valve systems are designed for in-wall (concealed) installation only. They're built to disappear behind your tile, leaving a clean, seamless look. Attempting to run them with exposed surface-mounted pipes won't just look off—it can compromise the valve's structural integrity and void the warranty.
6. Double-Check Everything Before the Wall Closes
Once the tile is up, changes get expensive fast. Do a final review of pressure, pipe orientation, and spacing before the wall is sealed. Future-you will be grateful.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
If your home has a high-capacity storage water heater or a high-output gas system, a thermostatic valve is a genuinely great upgrade. You set your temperature once, and it stays there. Morning after morning, no adjustments needed.
If your setup includes solar panels, a tankless heater, or a boiler system, go with a standard valve. It's not a consolation prize—it's a proven, dependable option that works beautifully when installed correctly.
